Papi Crackers- A Legacy

My daughters have different monikers they embrace for each of their Grandparents.  For my parents, they use the traditional Grandma and Grandpa.  For my wife’s Great Grandmother and Grandfather, they use Big Mamma and Big Papa. I think I like those names the best.  What’s especially great is how they came to be.  “Reagan, this is your Great Grandma” we said.  She says “Hi Big Mamma”.  And just like that a name was born.  We also have Noni, Papi, Papa Bear, Grandmommy, and Granny as names for the Grandparents.

All of them have different names, but what do they have in common?  Each of them is building a legacy with my children.  Unique and personal their memories will last with them forever.  The history of our family will become a part of them in some way or another.  We have an awesome opportunity to make it wonderful.

This past week my oldest daughter got sick.  Before I knew she had strep throat, I thought she had a stomach bug.  I told her we should try and eat some crackers to help her belly.  She says “but Daddy I think we are out of Papi Crackers.”  “What are Papi Crackers?” I said.  “You know! The club crackers Papi always eats.” She said.  I started laughing.  I thought about how Papi is always eating those crackers.

I think I am going to start calling them Papi crackers too.

Psalm 78: 5-7

5 He decreed statutes for Jacob

and established the law in Israel,

    which he commanded our ancestors

    to teach their children,

6 so the next generation would know them,

even the children yet to be born,

and they in turn would tell their children.

7 Then they would put their trust in God

and would not forget his deeds

    but would keep his commands.
